Tropical savannahs cover some 25 million ha of lowland plain in eastern Colombia that are characterized be very acid, (pH 4.2-4.5, higly aluminum saturated) latosols low in P, K, S, Ca and Mg. Rainfal is between 1500 and 2000 mm per year, with a severe dry season of over three months. Mean annual temperature is 27C. The savannahs are dominated by Trachypogon, Andropogon and Paspalum spp. In a grazing trial initiated on the native savannah, in 1971, live-weight gains of animals ranged from 146 to nearly 600 g/head/day during the eight month rainy season while losses of 150 to over 500 g/head/day were registered during the dry season. Total yearly production was of the order of 32 kg of live-weight gain/ha. Increasing stocking rate from 5 to 2 ha/animal, produced a decrease in per animal gain; per hectare gain was superior at the 3 ha/animal stocking rate. A 4 paddock rotational grazing system did not bring an improvement at any stocking rate. Molasses grass (Melinis minutiflora) and Jaragua grass (Hyparhenia rufa) are the principoal species that have been introduced and their use is very limited. |
